>Michael Crichton 1943 - 2008
John Wells, executive producer of "ER" called the author "an extraordinary man. Brilliant, funny, erudite, gracious, exceptionally inquisitive and always thoughtful.

"No lunch with Michael lasted less than three hours and no subject was too prosaic or obscure to attract his interest. Sexual politics, medical and scientific ethics, anthropology, archaeology, economics, astronomy, astrology, quantum physics, and molecular biology were all regular topics of conversation."

Crichton maintained a rigid work schedule: rising everyday before dawn and writing from about 6 a.m. to around 3 p.m., breaking only for lunch.  Legend has it that at his peak Michael Crichton could write up to 10,000 words a day.

*

Michael Crichton created an entirely new branch of science fiction with his series of best selling techno-thrillers starting in 1969 with Andromeda Strain through Timeline

As part of The Planetary Society's Messages from Earth program, Oris — along with a quarter million others from around the world — is now on Mars. Landing with him is Visions of Mars, a treasure trove of literature and art — from classic works by Arthur C. Clarke and Ray Bradbury to Orson Welles' radio retelling of H. G. WellsThe War of the Worlds to a special audio recording of Carl Sagan delivering a message to the future.

NASA extended the mission of the busy Phoenix lander on Monday, saying it will operate until it dies in the cold, dark Martian winter.  Found evidence that the chemical makeup of the dust on the surface of Mars resembles that of sea water

Fomenko revises Velikovsky, von Daniken, Sitchin and Jaynes

Must-read for specialized statisticians, theologians and historians.

ROOM 322 BOOK REVIEW
by Oris Bracken

History: Fiction or Science?
by Anatoly T. Fomenko
[Delamere Publishing, 2003]

Anatoly T. Fomenko and his believers belong to an unlikely group of rogues.  They've joined with a notorious gang of four: Immanuel Velikovsky, Eric von Daniken, Zecharia Sitchin and Julian Jaynes

These guys, I’m sure, would rather not be tossed into the same pot.  But a common thread connects their famous books Worlds in Collision, Chariots of the Gods?, The Twelfth Planet, The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind, and now, History: Fiction or Science?.

Each thesis depends heavily on the ancient writings of Hebrew prophets and patriarchs and compares them to other old texts.  They all assume the ancient reports depict valid events and argue that our prevailing interpretations misguided.

There’s no way for me to judge the almost three-hundred pages of statistics and charts found in the History of Fomenko --and they are at the heart of it.  The rest is his educated conjecture based on reinterpreting ancient phrases and art.  A process we can all second-guess.

The basic Fomenko premise:  through statistical text analysis and by comparing fragments, phrase ‘images’ are found.  These can be sorted as dependent and independent text elements.  So it’s possible to note repetition of ideas and trace them to the first instance.   Dependent occurrences are considered fictitious, or at best, suspicious.

Fomenko discovered many passages in the Christian Testaments are duplications.  Not every book attributed to the old desert prophets was valid.

Furthermore, he claimed some of those guys, like Ezekiel and Jeremiah, never existed.  The glory that was Rome and ancient Greece are medieval reconstructions.  Fomenko even questions the biblical location of Egypt, and thinks the Sphinx also medieval.

Turns out a fellow named Scaliger--‘the founder of modern chronology’--was the key player in dating what I studied as olden history.  He started work about 1585 and used the two Testaments as his chronological guideposts.  Since both these books too are midieval creations, according to Fomenko, my learnt chronology is bogus.  No doubt, Wells, Toynbee and Durant are in permanent spin state.

So what?  Who cares if the Dark Ages and the Renaissance didn’t exist?  There are lots of calendars, so if this radical theory proves out, no harm done.  Sure, three of the world’s major religions will have to revise their holy books.  Plus Mediterranean and Middle East histories must change.

There’s the problem.

Velikovsky said Earth experienced a major astro-catastrophe about twenty-five hundred years ago.  This new chronology would reset the Big Astro Event to only fifteen hundred years ago, likely less.  The new sequence means updating the alien cross-breeding era of von Daniken by moving it closer to us.  Sitchin needs to recalculate his Nibiru arrival time.  And the new Jaynes year for the ending of bicameral voices is, at the oldest, 600AD.

Fomenko uses the Testaments’ passages to plot astronomical charts.  He recreates the heavens to date the observer.  But some of his interpretations are not so apparent.

He writes, p 148:  “‘the third had a face like a man’ is obviously a reference to Sagittarius visited by the sun in the beginning of winter.”   Well, to me, not so obvious.

Alice Bailey had a different astrology: "...between the Bull and the Lion is the face of Enoch, the man (Aquarius)."

The horoscopes Fomenko presents occurred between centuries IX and XVIIl.  He believes parts of the OT were written after the NT!  The Apocalypse in the Revelation of Saint John was penned in October, 1486.

Hmm.  How does he know the references his star charts rely on were THE master biblical codices?  Early as XIII century, our founder of modern science, Roger Bacon, stressed the use of original documents for studying linguistics or written history.

Fomenko points out early in his hypothesis that most manuscripts we work with today are copies, and many are palimpsests.  Translations are biased, texts expanded.

If both Testaments were actually copied from older scrolls in centuries XI through XVI, then embellishers--not the authors--inserted medieval constellations.

Chronology 1 of 7 is a big book, 586 pages of translated Russian.  Dense, though layman-comprehensible.  Pictures and charts outstanding.  Unfortunately, the fifty-page bibliography of mostly Russian sources is not specific to this volume.  One great shortcoming --no index

History: Fiction or Science? convinced me our pre-Columbian timeline contains major errors.  This mind-jolting, statistics based, revisionist concept can only grow in importance.  Fomenko has pried open a long sealed door.

>Chief Egypt Archaeologist: "Exodus a Myth"
Half century ago, Velikovsky was in trouble for moving Exodus 500 years closer.  Fomenko now says Dynasty dates wrong, 'ancient' Egypt a myth too.

"The Egyptian and Jewish histories, as they are written, are devoid of a single synchronism in a period of many hundreds of years. Exodus, an event which concerns both peoples, is presumably not mentioned in the Egyptian documents of the past."  [Velikovsky, 1946]

>Watch 1986 launch of the Challenger

This disaster occured before the day of alternative news on the Web and low-power FM.  In the original reports engineers and scientists scoffed at the O-ring theory.  Finally, the Rogers Commission decided the O-rings were the only logical answer.

Then later, conspiracy theorists whispered it was black op.  The objective was a military takeover of the civilian space program, while making positive psychological TV imprint on a generation of American children.  The key was the school teacher on board for emotive student involvment; plus an almost ideal demographic crew-profile.

I saw the fatal launch on live TV and will never forget it.  I was shocked, but not surprised.  Today's space rockets are a Ride At Your Own Risk adventure.  Tragedies are expected.  Those brave Astronauts and Cosmonauts riding atop flaring candles, adrenalin-pumping, know they take the BIG chance.  This is the stuff of human eXploration and they are the first space heroes.
